Discover the beauty of Catalonia ’s medieval villages on this small-group day trip from Barcelona. Meet your guide in central Barcelona and relax in a comfortable minivan as you take in views of the green countryside on the 1.5-hour drive to Besalú.
When you arrive, enjoy a guided walking tour of this beautifully preserved village from the Middle Ages. See the town's arcaded streets, visit a restored mikveh (an old Jewish bath from the 12th century), and see the remains of a medieval synagogue.
Continue by minivan toward the village of Rupit. On the way, pass by Castellfollit de la Roca, one of the smallest towns in Catalonia with 1,000 habitants in just 3,280 square feet (1,000 square meters), located on the edge of a basalt precipice. When you arrive in Rupit, enjoy two hours of free time to visit this beautiful village at your own leisure. Wander along the cobblestone streets lined with 16th-century country houses, stop by the hanging wooden bridge, and visit the Baroque-era Church of Sant Miquel. Have lunch at a local restaurant (own expense) and see the remains of the Castle of Rupit on a rocky peak.
Next, enjoy a scenic drive to the top of the Cingles de Tavertet sandstone cliffs, located by the Ter river valley. Pass by a megalithic tomb -- a field of funerary urns -- and the Iberian Wall until you reach the village of Tavertet. With your guide, visit this charming village, declared a National Property of Cultural Interest due to its 48 preserved houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Learn interesting facts about this village as you admire the houses and the 11th-century Romanesque Church of Sant Cristòfol. Enjoy a short break to grab a coffee at a local café (own expense) or walk to the viewpoint to admire stunning views over the Panta de Sau lake.
Then, relax on the drive back to Barcelona and take in views of El Magatalls, a beautiful lush forest, and El Montseny, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere-listed natural park.

A tremendous historical experience. It was as if you were back in time. Every inch of every street and wall,l were medieval and Gothic. The villages were actual livable villages. You need sneakers tostep back in time.
The first 2 villages were lovely, to be sure. The third village was a throw away. It was literally 1 street long and you stopped for only 5 minutes to take a few photo's of the view. I think the price was a little steep for what you received. The road to the second village was a 30 minute VERY twisty road uphill Several folks on my van got motion sickness from the severe turns. Keep this in mind if you are prone to motion sickness.
Picture Perfect Villages , True taste of rural catalonia , avoid the lunch if possible and explore the villages instead.
Very glad to have a professional tour guide Jordi who is very experience and informative. And considering for the situation of the team member. Very good driving skill even on a many sharp bend mountain. Driving us comfortable and smoothly during the whole trip. The Medieval villages are lovely and total different feeling than just visiting in the town. And very helpful while talking with the hotline for the details before the trip. For sure will consider to travel with Viator in my future trips.
Full day of touring medieval Spanish villages. Besalu is a restful little village where I could have easily spent the entire day. Tavertet is very small, but has a number of restaurants and shops. The third village, Rupit, is extremely small and isolated but has an especially beautiful overlook. The day we visited the surrounding area was shrouded in clouds. Even then it was a beautiful view. There was a third village, The guide, Gloria, provided a lively commentary an was able to set a comfortable pace for everyone in our small group. Mickey, the driver, did an excellent job in maneuvering along some mountain roads. It is difficult to pace a tour so that people can experience an area without becoming bored. I felt that Gloria did an excellent job in doing just that. People do need to consider their physical condition when touring medieval sites, however, as there are always stairs, slopes (up and down), and pathways that can quickly become slippery when wet.
A great way to see 3 medieval villages all in a day. Each place was really nice and charming and great locations. Lots of history to learn.
great tour! will recommend anyone who is staying Barcelona for days.
This was a terrific trip. Our guide Enrique was terrific. Very knowledgeable and a fun tour guide. Really enjoyed the first two villages, but the third felt like filler.
Beautiful village walk down toward the water worth the view
The trip was very informative and also enjoyable in beautiful landscapes. The villages were unique and each has their own history and stories. Our guide, Sergio gave us excellent information and was very nice company during the trip. I recommend to everybody!
