lha Grande (Portuguese "Big Island") is an island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The island, which is part of the municipality of Angra dos Reis, remains largely undeveloped. For almost a century it was closed by the Brazilian government to free movement or settlement because it first housed a leper colony and then a top-security prison. Cândido Mendes high-security prison housed some of the most dangerous prisoners within the Brazilian penal system. It was closed in 1994. The largest village on the island is called Vila do Abraão with approximately 1900 inhabitants.

Amazing day with friendly and fun guides. Amazing snorkelling and ocean life and a good lunch! Would totally recommend.

This was sold to us as a small group tour. We were told the dock was a two hour drive, but we were in the van for well over three hours. Then we when got to he boat there were probably one hundred people or more on it. There was no room to move around at all. It was supposed to be a relaxing cruise around he islands but it was a total party boat. We were told we would be home by 8 but we got home at 10:30.
