Shanghai was the end of a tour which started in Singapore, then Ho Chi Minh City , Hong Kong and ending in Shanghai. Although we did not know it when we booked it, this tour was the perfect way to see Shanghai at night. By ourselves, we could not possibly have seen the places Christina showed us. We have spoken before and since to people who have lived or worked in Shanghai and they are amazed at what we managed to do and see and the various areas i.e. "shop houses", French Concession and martinis on the 92nd floor of the financial sector Park Hyatt with it's amazing views was second to none. We have always combined "organised excursions" with "doing our own thing" but [n Shanghai we would say "book a tour". Our ship gave us a list of the most popular places we might like to see in English and also in Chinese characters, and we also made sure that we had our hotel's stationery with the address in both languages as the taxi drivers do not and indeed are not expected ( and why should they?) to speak English.
