Become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the 2,5-hour ride from Vienna. By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was among the last concentration camps to be liberated by the Allies.

Upon arrival at the Memorial grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) for a self-guided tour through the preserved grounds. See the prisoner’s barracks, Wiener-Graben quarry, the so-called 'Stairs of Death', SS-quarters, camp prison, gas chamber and the highly rated Mauthausen Museum.

Heading back to Vienna stop at a local restaurant for lunch (own expense).

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the history and culture of Austria and answered all questions. The passenger van was very clean. As a bonus the guide took all of us back to our respective hotels and for me my river cruise ship, which was not an easy task during Vienna rush hour traffic. This was an excellent tour and done in a very professional manner. I will recommend Viator for anyone seeking to book a tour. Thank you for your time.

Mauthausen is difficult to put into words. You can't call it a great day trip, using the word great seems wrong given the history of the site, but I am glad I went. I think it is important to be aware of this history, and it is a very moving experience that makes you really think about what we humans have done to each other in certain circumstances. Our guide, Flemming, gave an excellent tour during the trip from Vienna to Mauthausen and back again. At Mauthausen we were given audio guides and a map, which worked very well. This allowed each person or small group to go at their own pace, rather than need to stick with a large tour group which might move on before you were finished at a given site, and the time allotted to experience the camp was more than adequate. I have also been to Dachau, and Mauthausen is not as developed. They don't have as much reconstructed, particularly as regards interior furnishings, and the overall footprint of the Maulthausen memorial site is smaller. But Mauthausen is well done, and the room in the museum with the names of the known victims is particularly impactful, incredibly sobering. I strongly recommend this trip for anyone who feels it is important to remember and learn from history.

Eye opening, gloomy but worth the expense. Reading about these places and seeing them in Movies are one thing. But Nothing beats by actually physically being there.

Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable on Vienna as we departed the city on our way to Mauthausen. Our journey to Mauthausen didn't seem long and it helped to view the video on the memorial prior to arriving, there was much to see more than what we were able to take in, the only thing we weren't able to see was the stairs which happened to be closed being it was winter. If you visit Vienna, a day trip to Mauthausen should be one place to see not for young children.

Excellent tour. There was only 6 of us on the tour which made it easy to ask questions and meet people with similar interest. The guide was very knowledgeable. He was able to answer all our questions and he provided an ipad for us to look at on the way to the camp so we knew what to expect when we arrived. This was really good and helped in making the best of the tour. It was a very interesting but sad tour but well worth a visit
